Chimney sweeping and complete inspection

Chimney sweeping and inspection are important processes to ensure the proper functioning and safety of your wood heating system. Here is a brief explanation of these terms:

Chimney sweeping: Chimney sweeping involves cleaning the inside of the chimney to remove deposits of soot, creosote and other debris that accumulate over time. These deposits can block the chimney, reduce draft efficiency and increase the risk of fire. Chimney sweeping is carried out using special tools such as a chimney sweeping brush to remove these deposits and keep the chimney clean and functional.

– Facilities Chimney Inspection: The chimney inspection is a visual assessment of the condition of the chimney to detect possible problems or damage. It allows you to check the structural integrity of the chimney, identify cracks, potential leaks for water or smoke infiltration, deformations or any other sign of deterioration. A thorough inspection may also include the use of special cameras to examine the interior of the chimney and identify problems not visible to the naked eye.

Chimney sweeping and inspection are important preventive measures to maintain the safety and performance of your wood heating system. They help reduce the risk of fire, carbon monoxide poisoning and other problems associated with a poorly maintained chimney.

Municipalities (Magog, Lac-Brome, Sherbrooke, etc.) and insurance companies require it (Promutuel, IA, Intact, etc.). In addition, it does not depend on the amount of wood you burn, but the way you heat it which determines the frequency of chimney sweepings, small fires create more creosote than large, very hot fires.

Waterproofing your chimney cover against water infiltration

Waterproofing the chimney cap is crucial to protect the chimney structure from water infiltration. The chimney cap plays a key role in preventing rainwater, snow or other external elements from entering the flue, which could cause internal damage.

Before waterproofing, we check the condition of the chimney cover. If it is cracked, damaged or ill-fitting, it may not be effective in preventing water penetration. In this case, repair or replacement is necessary.

We make sure the chimney cap is clean before applying any product. We remove all debris, soot, moss or any other residue that might interfere with the application of waterproofing.

Once the chimney cover is in good condition and clean, we apply a waterproofing product (Silicone) specifically designed for masonry and steel materials (brick, stone, concrete, sheet metal, stainless steel, etc.). Silicone is generally used as a waterproofing material and is often chosen for its flexibility and ability to resist weathering and mildew.

Waterproofing a chimney cover is not a one-off maintenance operation. We recommend reapplication every 2 to 4 years, or more frequently if you live in a region subject to high humidity or severe weather.

Waterproofing your chimney cover is a key step in prolonging the life of your chimney and preventing moisture problems.

Chain sweeping (remove stubborn creosote)

Chain sweeping is necessary when the masonry chimney is too obstructed to carry out effective chimney sweeping due to too much accumulation of creosote and/or tar. This extends the life of the chimney, but also makes it safe by avoiding a chimney fire.

Stainless Steel Cap Maintenance and Installation

Maintaining and installing a stainless steel chimney cap is an important step in ensuring the proper functioning and safety of your chimney. A chimney cap is a device that is installed on top of the chimney to prevent the entry of debris, animals or rainwater, while promoting proper smoke evacuation.

Stainless steel is a commonly used material for chimney caps due to its durability, corrosion resistance, and ability to withstand the high temperatures generated by the chimney. Here are some important points regarding the maintenance and installation of stainless steel chimney caps:

Cleaning: It is recommended to clean the stainless steel chimney cap regularly to remove soot deposits, oxidation residues and other dirt that may accumulate. This can be done using suitable tools such as a wire brush or a damp cloth.

Inspection: It is important to periodically inspect the condition of the stainless steel chimney cap for possible damage, such as cracks, deformation or signs of corrosion. If problems are detected, it is recommended to have the cap repaired or replaced to ensure proper operation.

Installation: The installation of a stainless steel chimney cap should be carried out by a qualified professional. The cap must be properly sized to fit the size of the chimney and installed securely to ensure a good seal and secure fit.

Benefits: A stainless steel chimney cap offers many benefits, including protection from debris and animals, preventing problems related to moisture buildup, and reducing hazards fire by preventing sparks from escaping the chimney.

Changing damaged firebricks

Changing damaged fire bricks is a necessary operation to ensure the proper functioning and safety of your fireplace or wood stove. When the firebrick develops cracks, chips or significant signs of wear, it is important to replace it to avoid potential problems such as heat leaks, smoke infiltration or fire hazards.

Firebricks are also used to protect the stove or fireplace, because a flame directly on the interior walls will twist the firebox and can cause cracks.

*So the bricks are used to protect the firebox so that it does not get damaged.

Here are the general steps for changing a damaged firebrick:

Preparation: Make sure the fireplace or wood stove is completely cooled before beginning the replacement process. Wear appropriate protective gloves when handling firebricks.
Removing Old Brick: Determine which brick is damaged and carefully remove it from the fireplace. Use a hammer and chisel to remove broken or loose pieces of brick. Please do not damage surrounding bricks.

Cleaning: Once the old brick is removed, clean the work area thoroughly to remove debris and brick residue. Make sure the surface is clean and smooth before installing the new brick.

Installing the new brick: Place the new firebrick in the intended location, making sure it fits correctly and is aligned with the other bricks. Use a rubber hammer to firmly pack the brick and ensure its stability.

Finish: Check that the new brick is securely attached and is level with the other bricks in the fireplace.

It is important to note that the process of replacing fire bricks may vary depending on the type of fireplace or wood stove you have, as well as the specific configuration of your appliance. It is recommended that you consult your appliance’s user manual or have a qualified professional carry out the firebrick change if you are unsure of the procedure to follow.

Gutter cleaning

Gutter cleaning involves removing debris such as leaves, branches, plant debris and other obstructions that can accumulate in the gutters of a home or building. This is essential to keep gutters functioning properly and avoid problems such as water overflows, leaks and structural damage.

When cleaning gutters, a professional uses specific tools such as ladders, buckets, protective gloves, and possibly a garden hose to effectively remove debris. They also inspect the gutters for possible problems such as cracks, damaged joints, or sections that need repair.

Regular gutter cleaning is recommended, usually once or twice a year, depending on the amount of debris accumulated in your area. This may vary depending on factors such as surrounding trees and weather conditions.
